Summer School Letter 2025

Welcome to Architecture and Design Museum’s Fill This Space Summer School of Architecture and the Built Environment for 16-20 year olds!

The summer school is organised at the Architecture and Design Museum. The museum has two museum buildings. The names of the museum buildings are A-building and D-building. A-building is the former Museum of Finnish Architecture, located on Kasarmikatu (Kasarmikatu 24, 00130 Helsinki). D-building is the former Design Museum, located on Korkeavuorenkatu (Korkeavuorenkatu 23, 00130 Helsinki). In addition, during the summer school, trips are also made to other destinations located in the Helsinki metropolitan area (HSL area).

Pre-assignment: Your favorite and least favorite place​​

What is your favorite placeWhat about least favorite place?​

Present your favorite place and your least favorite place verbally and visually to the group (5min/person). You can use the following questions to support your reflections:

  • How do you feel in these places?
  • What can you do in these places?​
  • What kind of spaces are these places? (5 adjectives)​
  • What materials are in those spaces?​
  • Why did you choose this space?​
  • How would you present your favorite and least favorite place visually to others? (photograph, video, drawing etc.)

The pre-assignment can be approached lightly and without pressure. You can do it in a way that suits you the best. You can present your assignment to others, for example, verbally, in writing, or visually by sending a picture to the summer school’s WhatsApp group on the first day of the summer school.

Theme: Urban Nature and Architecture
Meeting place: Exhibition Centre WeeGee (Ahertajantie 5, 02100 Espoo)

Architecture and public art campus tour will take you on a journey, on which you will explore some of the finest examples of traditional and contemporary Finnish architecture. Aalto University’s trained and experienced student guides will tell how the campus was transformed from an ancient village to an innovation hub. On the tour you will have a walkthrough campus’ main hot spots, learn about history, architecture, art collection themes and some of the sustainable solutions.

The project Accommodating urban spaces to aging population, KARMI, is a joint project of the Department of Architecture at Aalto University, the SOTERA research group, and the Finnish Environment Institute Syke. During the visit, architect Jenna Koivisto tells about the project as well as about human centered design and what to consider when designing for all, not only a few.

Jaakko Torvinen an architect specialized in wood construction. His Master’s thesis was Pikku-Finlandia, a temporary movable wooden building as a temporary conference building for Finlandia Hall, which he designed together with his fellow students. Its specialty is whole pine trees as load-bearing columns. During the visit, Jaakko tells about the project.

13–13.30 Visit: The Architecture and Design Museum’s collections, archives and library

The architecture collections of the Architecture and Design Museum focus on the period after 1900. The aim of the collection is to record and examine the creative process of architecture. The collections include 500,000 drawings, 120,000 photographs and 800 scale models. The museum’s extensive and diverse design collection sheds light on the history and development of Finnish industrial arts. The collection includes 75,000 objects, 45,000 drawings, 125,000 images and a designer register containing information on 1,000 designers. The Architecture and Design Museum’s library is a special library available to everyone. Books can also be borrowed. The collections contain a total of approximately 26,000 works, from books to magazines and from interviews to correspondence.

Materials, equipment, trips and meals

Participation in the summer school is free of charge. The Architecture and Design museum does not reimburse the costs of meals or accommodation from the summer school. Part of the activity is organized outdoors, so please prepare for the school days with weather-appropriate clothing and equipment as well as goos shoes for walking. It’s good to have sunscreen and a bottle of water with you!

Materials and equipment

The museum provides the necessary materials and equipment for summer school activities. Each participant receives a sketchbook and a sketchpen from the museums at the beginning of the summer school. The participants’ own devices may also be used in summer schools. This will be mentioned separately.

Trips

All trips during the summer school week take place in the HSL area. Participants have had the opportunity to apply for a five-day HSL ticket (ABCD) from the museum if they do not have their own travel card or if it is not valid during the summer school. The summer school instructors will distribute the HSL tickets purchased by the museum to the participants who have applied for them on the first day of the summer school.

Meals

Each summer school day includes a one-hour lunch break, for which participants bring their own lunch. The Design Museum has a refrigerator and a microwave oven. On Friday, the museum offers lunch for the entire summer school group. Dietary and allergy information regarding the shared lunch will be collected during the summer school week.

Accessibility

The more accessible entrances to the Architecture and Design Museum are located in the museum’s courtyard. The address of the entrances is Ullanlinnankatu 4, 00130 Helsinki.

There is one parking space reserved for customer use in the museum courtyard. This parking space is recommended for museum visitors who use wheelchairs, for example. A parking permit for the duration of your visit to the museum can be obtained from the customer service desk.

The entrance to D-building on the Ullanlinnankatu side is accessible. D-building has an accessible elevator. The accessible toilet in D-building is located on the 0th floor. D-building does not have an induction loop. You can find more information about the accessibility of the D-building at this link.

The entrance to A-building on the Ullanlinnankatu side is not barrier-free, but it is recommended, for example, for museum visitors using wheelchairs. There is an elevator in A-building. The larger than usual toilet with armrests in A-building is located on the 0th floor. A-building does not have an induction loop. Architecture and design belong to everyone. We at the Architecture and Design Museum want everyone to have the opportunity to have a safe museum experience and participate as themselves, without fear of discrimination or harassment.   • If you are sick or have flu symptoms, please do not attend the summer school.
  • Please remember to take care of good hand hygiene.
  • Cough into your sleeve or tissue.

WhatsApp group

Summer school participants have been added to the summer school WhatsApp group based on the consent given in the application form. The group allows for discussion and questions regarding school activities before and during the summer school. You can leave the group after the summer school has ended.

Instructors

The instructors of the summer school are Irina Kreer-Boulay, a museum pedagogue at the Architecture and Design Museum, and Pihla Kuusela, a member of the You Tell Me collective and an architect.
