In the 1960s Finland’s new economic prosperity led to the migration of many Finnish people from the countryside to towns and to a housing shortage. In new suburban developments, the infrastructure of whole new communities, including residences, shops, and daycare centers, was planned. Olari, designed by Simo Järvinen in the late 1960s, is based on a compact grid pattern. It separates pedestrian routes and car parking and follows dramatic hilly and rocky terrain. Our tour addresses the ideas about neighborhood planning that influenced the design and the values that it seeks to promote, and the construction methods and materials of the buildings.
3 PM – 4.15 PM (PRE-REGISTRATION IS NEEDED)
Architecture Walk: 1970s Eastern Pasila
Language: English | Participation: Free of Charge
For more information and pre-registration: https://vanha.mfa.fi/…/architecture-walking-tour-1970s…/
The walking tour introduces one of the most significant compact cities of the 1970s, Eastern Pasila (Itä-Pasila). The almost utopian approach that strongly shapes the environment can be seen and felt in an urban area that is unique and usually evokes a wide range of emotions.

In this workshop we slow down to listen and follow the movements of the more than human world. Who do we share this space with? What kind of feelings and thoughts this encounter raises? The workshop requires focused presence so please join us in time. Insects are being studied together with Insect Researcher Juho Paukkunen.
