Welcome to explore the historical layers of architecture in Helsinki!

The visiting guide of the Museum of Finnish Architecture, Chicago-based Gayle McKeen, leads city dwellers and tourists on walking tours in Helsinki in August.

The guide, Gayle McKeen, is an experienced tour guide. She holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago and has taught at universities in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Discover how town planning created two of Helsinki’s most beautiful neighborhoods, distinctive for their parks and colorful residential buildings.The tour embarks from the museum towards the cozy Ullanlinna quarters by the seaside and then proceeds to briefly explore the Eira neighborhood.

Accessibility

All walking tours take place in urban public space and last about 2 hours. The total length of the routes is about 3–4 kilometers. During the tours, stairs and unnecessary steps are avoided. Along the routes there are non-beveled curbs and in some places uneven terrain with height differences. On the walking tours, the progression is calm and includes several stops. There are no easily accessible seats or benches along the route. You can bring your own camping chair. The guide uses a mic and a carriable speaker on the tours. The nearest accessible public and gender neutral toilet is located at the Museum of Finnish Architecture (Kasarmikatu 23, 00130 Helsinki).

COVID–19 safety

  • Do not not participate in the walking tour if you are sick or have any symptoms of the flu. 
  • The walking tour will be organized in a group of ten (10) people. 
  • A safety distance of one to two (1–2) meters is kept during the walking tour. 
  • During the walking tour, we require the use of the face mask or a vizier by all participants over the age of 12.
